Dr. D Y Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre situated at Pimpri, Pune have gained recognition not only in medical expertise but also in hygiene and cleanliness. The premier medical institute of Maharashtra has bagged the first prize under the government’s Kayakalp scheme for 2019-20. The College, Hospital & Research Centre has been evaluated and awarded as per the Kayakalp guidelines established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.


The Health Ministry had prepared a list of central government institutions, district and private hospitals and community health centres for their work in maintaining high standards of sanitation and hygiene in public health facilities and awarded these hospitals under the ‘Kayakalp Awards Scheme’. Around 653 Hospitals from across the country had participated in this scheme. Only 11 hospitals were selected out of which, Dr. D Y Patil College, Hospital & Research Centre clinched the numero uno position.
The Kayakalp Award was instituted as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ on 15 May 2015. It is a national initiative to recognize and felicitate public health facilities that demonstrate high levels of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control measure on promoting cleanliness in public spaces
The aim of the initiative is to improve and promote the cleanliness, hygiene, waste management and infection control practices in public health care facilities and incentivize the exemplary performing facilities. The scheme is intended to encourage and incentivize Public Health Facilities (PHFs) in the country to demonstrate their commitment to cleanliness, hygiene and infection control practices.
The Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Preeti Sudan, Health Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) presented the awards to the winner at New Delhi. Dr. Yashraj Patil, Treasurer, Dr. D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune received the award on behalf of Dr. D Y Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pune. Also present on the occasion were the Dr. J S Bhawalkar, Dean, Dr. D Y Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre and Dr. H Chavan.
