Pune Brain- Dead Woman’s vital organs give new life to three

PUNE : PARVEZ SHAIKH The family of a 60-year-old woman agreed to donate five of her organs; liver, corneas and both kidneys which gave a new lease of life to five people on Sunday. The donor suffered from Road Traffic Accident, following which she was admitted to Dr. D. Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pune on Wednesday. Despite all the medical treatment, she could not be revived.

The patient was declared brain dead on Saturday at Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune. As per the provision of Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994, our transplant co-ordinator has counseled them about Organ Donation.

From this organ donation, three terminally ill patients got a new lease of life after son consented to donate his deceased mother’s organs at the Dr. D. Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pune on October 13.

“The woman was declared brain-dead on Sunday morning. Her family gave their consent to donate her 2 kidneys, liver and 2 Corneas, which are in a suitable condition and can be transplanted to a patient in need,”

A cadaveric donation takes place when the family of a patient declared brain-dead, agrees to donate his or her organs. The donated organs benefited two patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease and another patient suffering from liver failure at the Dr. D. Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pune.

Son stated that he is in deep pain and sorrow for his mother but still he wanted to donate organs instead of bury or burn the precious organs of his mother, which can become a new ray of hope in someone’s life.

Dr Tushar Dighe, Prof. and HOD Nephrology Department said that from this organ donation 2 patients are benefitted and they are recovering well.

Prof and HOD Urology Dr Vilas Sabale said that this is a unique event in the surgical career of a transplant surgeon to have cadaveric multiple organ harvesting. We then proceeded to transplant the kidneys in the needy recipients, one a 32year lady and a 47year old man. We wish that cadaveric organ donation acceptance in the society increases to fulfill the need.

Talking about Liver transplant, Dr. Bipin Vibhute said, “Theretrievedliver was transplanted to a 60 yrs. old male from pune suffering from Liver Disease. His condition was worsening and transplant is only option for his survival.

Dr. P. S. Garcha, Director- Corporate Services thanked organ donor family for their noble gesture towards society. Further he expressed that with more awareness regarding organ donation programme undertaken by Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, the number of such donation will take a quantum jump in the near future. This will augur well for the future of critically ill patient whose survival depends on transplant surgery.

Dr. H. H. Chavan, Medical Superintendent stated that “Each year thousands of people die while for a transplant, because no suitable donor can be found for them. The need for organ donor has never been greater. Hence, awareness of organ donation should be raised on large scale. Private institutions as well as govt. organizations startedtaking much more efforts to create awareness among the society”

Dr. J. S. Bhawalkar, the Dean of the medical college expressed his satisfaction about team approach, efficiency they have shown in managing the entire organ donation process, and the spirit of doctorsat Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pune 18. He further mentioned the role of medical staff in the medical college for creating awareness on organ donation drive.

Vice Chairman Hon. Mrs. Bhagyashree Patil of, Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, said in a statement that, “Since last year, we have counseled many patients regarding organ donation as it is very important and noble cause, we should promote it for the betterment of the society. Organs of a deceased patient can save lives of at least six to eight people.During this year, we succeeded to convince 8 families of organ donor, through which 20 end stage organ failure patients got new lease of life.

Chairman Hon. Dr. P. D. Patil of, Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune expressed his gratitude toward organ donor and his family for such noble cause. This was possible due to world class facilities, team of skilled doctors, anesthetists, and support staff. Further he stated that there is huge gap in demand and supply of organs, which can be achieved by organ donation awareness. So we appeal more and more people from society to come forward and support this noble cause by organ pledging. We all would like to salute the donors and their relatives (Husband and Son) of 60 yrs. old women, who were although in immense grief of losing their dear one but took a courageous and noble decision to donate the organs to needy patients.”
