AI flight from China lands in Mumbai with 25,000kg cargo of medicines

MUMBAI: 777 flight AI-349 landed in Mumbai on Tuesday morning from Shanghai, China, carrying 25,000kg of cargo, most of which was medicines and Personal Protective Equipment .The flight carried 16 containers, 8 pallets of cargo, which included hazmat suits, said an Air India source.Despite the national lockdown, the cargo movement on the ground was smooth, as senior Air India officials from the commercial department who reside in the Air India colony located close to the airport, cleared the cargo.About 15 people, including loaders and tow tractor operators, are needed to handle a Boeing 777 flight. Social distancing does not pose a problem.The Maharashtra government has demanded that the Central governmentprovide the state with medical equipment, like PPEs, masks and ventilators. The Central government had last week announced that they had placed orders with different manufacturers in China and Signapore for these supplies.Actor Shah Rukh Khan on Monday provided 25,000 PPE kits to frontline medical staff in the state. The state government has also appealed to companies to donate medical equipment under Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) norms to the state.
